Kaikōura MP Stuart Smith welcomes today’s announcement from the Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism John Key that the Government will invest in Blenheim’s Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, through the Tourism Growth Partnership fund.

Through the fund, the Government will invest $1.5 million to support a new exhibition at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.

“It is fantastic to have such substantial Government investment in a tourism project in the Kaikōura electorate”, says Mr Smith.

“This centre is already one of Marlborough’s leading tourist attractions. This investment will enable it to reach its full potential with regards to the scale and quality of its exhibitions, and the number of tourists it could attract.

“The vision is for Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre to be one of the leading aviation museum experiences in the world. The extension and new exhibition will enhance the value of the Omaka Aviation Experience brand as a premium visitor experience of global significance”, says Mr Smith.

The extension of the current facility will house a new immersive visitor experience, featuring aircraft and locations from WWII. A new range of products will be developed which integrate with the existing WWI display but also extend to functions and flying activities.

“The Centre is already somewhere that I enjoy to visit regularly – most recently for the superb Classic Fighters Airshow in April. I am thoroughly excited to see the results of this investment”, says Mr Smith.
