Recognising Kaikōura’s volunteers
Local MP Stuart Smith welcomes Volunteer Week 2015 by acknowledging the hard work of the 8,535 volunteers in the Kaikōura electorate.
“It’s outstanding that 18.4% of locals give their time, skills and resources to help improve the health of our community,” says Mr Smith.
“As Kaikōura’s local MP I am immensely grateful for the contribution that our volunteers make.
“Volunteers freely donate their time and energy supporting a diverse range of non-profit institutions including youth organisations, social services, environmental and conservation projects, charities and many more.
“We are fortunate to have many fantastic voluntary organisations here in the Kaikōura electorate. They make a real difference to our community, and provide strong leadership in helping with a number of worthwhile initiatives,” says Mr Smith.
National Volunteer Week 2015 runs from 21 – 27 June and is themed, ‘there is a place for you to volunteer’.
National supports volunteers with $12.5 million through the Community Organisation Grants scheme, $1.5 million for community-led development, and $502,000 through the Support for Volunteering Fund available every year.
