New Opawa bridge to benefit Blenheim
Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith says the Opawa Bridge replacement near Blenheim will be completed sooner thanks to Government funding announced today.
Prime Minister John Key confirmed the State Highway 1 bridge will receive between $14 to $17.5 million to speed up its completion.
“I have advocated for this project for quite some time now, and I’m pleased to hear it’s going to become a reality far sooner than previously expected,” says Mr Smith.
“The current bridge is fairly narrow, creating difficulties for motorists on State Highway 1, particularly drivers of heavier vehicles like campervans and trucks.
“The replacement bridge will be resilient, wider, and more efficient.
“The current bridge will remain standing and will be used for improved pedestrian and cycle crossings,” says Mr Smith.
This project forms part of the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Programme which was announced by the Prime Minister in 2014, and is designed to speed up the completion of transport projects considered to be important to the regions.
