Stuart Smith MP supports temporary closure of scallop fishery
Local MP Stuart Smith supports the decision announced today by Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy to temporarily close part of the Southern Scallop Fishery (SCA7) for the upcoming season.
“This announcement follows scientific research and public consultation on the issue, and aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of this resource”, says Mr Smith.
“There has been an ongoing serious decline in the numbers of scallops in the fishery, and we need to take responsible action now to allow stocks to replenish.”
For the upcoming season, no commercial and recreational fishing of scallops in the Marlborough Sounds and part of Eastern Tasman Bay will be allowed, ending on 14 February 2017.
“Minister Guy consulted with a cross-sector group of industry and stakeholder representatives, in order to fully understand what is going on in the fishery, and to come up with an appropriate solution”, says Mr Smith.
“This group will continue to work with the Minister and the Ministry for Primary Industries to come up with an enduring strategy to manage this issue.”
