Opponents to changes claim the desires of a few wanting to shop over Easter are overriding the wishes and freedoms of those who don't want to work or shop during these holidays.

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said a reform of the Easter Trading laws was long overdue and retailers shouldn’t be penalised for opening.

“It’s time for a change in the law and to penalise business operators for opening at this time would be punitive.”

Annual crime rates throughout the Waitaki Police Districts have fallen according to Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean.

“Nationally, the crime rate is down 4.2 per cent per head of population. This is the fifth successive year crime has fallen and means recorded crime has dropped by more than 100,000 offences compared to 2009.
